As simple as they may seem, sandwiches are arguably one of the most versatile dishes, inspiring innovative ingredient combos, flavor profiles and even heated debates over what truly constitutes a hamburger or who makes the best Philly cheesesteak.
Elevating this “dish of the everyman” to a level of high art, sammie artiste Brittany Powell crafted edible interpretations of works by Piet Mondrian, Jasper Johns and Damien Hirst, among others. First, the world gave us Scanwiches; now, we can practically visit the MoMA on a plate. Who’ve thought you could pack so much creativity between two slices of bread!
