It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay

The worlds of music, pop culture and salacious celeb gossip took a severe hit recently with the death of Whitney Houston. Sad? Of course. Surprising? Not entirely. Untimely? Here’s where my opinion may differ from popular sentiment.

Before you get all up in arms, just hear me out… Whitney spent the last two+ decades as the reigning diva of pop/R&B/soul/film (even in her crack-addled later days, homegirl was still fierce), so what better way to go out that in the most dramatic, inconvenient fashion: one night before the Grammys. Knowing she’d become somewhat irrelevant over the last few years, Whitney’s death assured she’d not only secure top news headlines, magazine covers and broadcast features, it also left producers scrambling to rewrite the show as an homage to the fallen songstress.

There are other factors to consider here as well, like growing old, losing youthful good looks, falling into poor health, etc. Could you honestly see Whitney wheelchair-bound and feeble at 90-years-old? Hell, I’m not even sure she’d have the wherewithal to handle a few stray grays or an errant wrinkle. Props to Elizabeth Taylor for taking on elderly life with style and grace, but Whitney was far too headstrong a woman to let that happen.

Genius? No doubt about it.
