It’s hard to believe Halloween is within reach. My girlfriends and I already have an extensive email chain discussing the all-important weekend plans and, even more crucial, costume ideas. Of course, there’s the requisite Sexy [insert occupation here] and the whatever-the-hell-blood-covered animal/celebrity/inanimate object you can dream up for shock value. But topping the charts as this year’s most envelope-pushing costume: Anna Rexia. Reactions to the costume have been quite polarized, with eating disorder advocacy groups, ED sufferers and people with souls labeling Ms. Rexia as dangerous and offensive, while others think the costume is a reflection of the kooky Halloween spirit (and not all that different from just wearing a skeleton outfit).
While I think the costume is in poor taste, I’m not sure I’d go so far as to brand it harmful. That said, I agree with folks from organizations like the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa & Associated Disorders, who believe the outfit reinforces the lack of understanding in our culture toward eating disorders as a mental illness. What’s next—a bulimia costume? Just call it trendcasting for Halloween 2012.
