From stretch marks to episiotomies, there are myriad reasons why I’m terrified of child birth. Well, it’s time to add another to the list: 16.1-pound babies. As Hannah shared yesterday in her “Texas fantasy” post, a Texas woman recently gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, 16-pound, 1-ounce JaMichael Brown (see also: the manatee of the infant world). What Hannah failed to share (those Texans aren’t huge fans of transparency!) was that’s the average size of a six-month-old child. Though, mercifully, the baby, known affectionately as “Moose,” was delivered via C-section, the underlying ordeal really is painful for JaMichael and family. A product of his mother’s poorly controlled gestational diabetes, the newborn is at a higher risk for obesity and diabetes later in life.
Giving the two-foot tall child’s size even greater context, particularly for those of us who don’t encounter (read: avoid at all costs) babies in our day-to-day lives, The Frisky designed a handy chart comparing JaMichael’s weight with that of more familiar items. Let’s just say, I’ll never look at Diet Coke in the same light again.
Now, excuse me while I go close up shop for good.
