As a self-described crime junkie, I troll the internet on the hunt for the nation’s latest and greatest in murder and missing persons stories. I’ve read memoirs by confessed serial killers and gang members. I even forced a family friend to tell me about his Southie upbringing in detail on Christmas Eve (as a kid he witnessed someone’s head bashed in with a sledgehammer, and yes, he knew Whitey). My obsession has also robbed me of countless hours of productivity, spending hours of the day and night on the couch glued to shows like Snapped, On the Case with Paula Zahn, I Survived… and Wicked Attraction, and it should come as no surprise that I consider Investigation Discovery my go-to network. But I promise you, I’m no heartless gore-monger. Call it my self-education should I ever find myself in a situation where I must escape, duck, and roll out of a car trunk while moving at 50 mph…
Now, unless you live under a rock at the bottom of the ocean, you’ve undoubtedly read of Whitey’s capture. I am jumping-out-of-my-bones excited to hear what details (old or new) will be made public about this man’s life. He isn’t the first — and he certainly won’t be the last — gangster without regard for human life, but I think I speak for most, especially those from Boston, when I say that my curiosity has taken me hostage. I need to know…how the f*&k do you become this person!? It’s not easy to be simultaneously seemingly indestructible and fallible — he’s avoided numerous attempts at his life, eluded the FBI for 16 years, been responsible for the torture and murder of countless people…and yet finally got caught.
All I can hope for now? An episode of I (Almost) Got Away With It...Bulger edition.
