See Ya Later Vampires, Hello Mermaids!

I’ve never been on board with the Twilight craze. Actually, I find the vampire trend sort of annoying and over-dramatic. I mean, what’s so appealing about a pale-faced, ultra-emotional blood sucker? My apologies to the millions of “Twi-hards” out there, but I just don’t get it.

Mermaids, on the other hand, are more my style. As a competitive swimmer, I had dreams of becoming one of the scaly beauties during my five-year-old Little Mermaid days. So when they started popping up in this spring’s movies, books and events, I was relieved by the change in trending fantasy characters. That’s right vampire fans, even USA Today confirmed it…mermaids are the next big thing.

Pirates of the Caribbean brought the mermaid trend to the surface this May by adding zombie-like versions of the sea creatures to their most recent Hollywood installment. Jumping on the trend, Sony Pictures is now working with Country Strong director Shana Feste on a darker version of Disney’s age-old mermaid story based on Carolyn Turgeon’s book Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale.  And authors like Sarah Porter and Mandy Hubbard are taking advantage of the fishy fad as well, releasing mermaid-inspired novels this July. (Take that Stephanie Meyer!)

If these sea nymph sagas don’t satisfy your mermaid fixation, check out MerCon 2011, the first ever mermaid convention to be held in Las Vegas this August. The two-day event will include live aquatic performances by mer-named ladies like Hannah Mermaid and Marina MeduSirena along with one fire-eating mermaid (what in the world!?), a mermaid pool party (tails encouraged) and opportunities to mingle with other mermaid enthusiasts.

Okay maybe buying tickets to MerCon would be going a little overboard, but it would definitely be cooler than willingly spending time with these blood suckers!
