Cookie Monster Chic

I like to read up on fashion week every year, just to see what’s happening in the industry. I’m not all that adventurous with my own style but I can appreciate a forward-thinking, completely ridiculous, high fashion runway look. This season, brights are everywhere — accessories, separates, makeup, you name it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a pop of color, a neon accessory here or a red pant there (my favorite purchase of the season so far!) but this look from Blumarine Fall RTW at last month’s Milan Fashion Week is just more than I can handle. Masses of neon orange fuzz will never look chic. And I challenge you to find me a single woman who would want to tote around an electric blue fur ball as a purse every day.

If that thing can make model Joan Smalls look like a size 16, I don’t even want to know what it would do to me. High fashion is one thing; high fashion from Jim Henson’s protégée is quite another.

Meet at Mr. Hooper’s, it’s Time to #OccupySesameStreet!

Whether you think Occupy (insert city, destination, school here) is serious, important, impactful (insert adjective here) or not, the internet always has its own views on such events. After the #OccupyWallStreet movement sprang up across the country, it finally reached its ultimate destination: Sesame Street. Like most other things on the internet, it all started with a tweet: “Urgent phone call to roommates #occupysesamestreet.” Soon after, comedians blew up their own twitter accounts with messages like “Why isn’t Reporter Kermit covering this? #occupysesamestreet.” and “Truly outrageous that 99% of the cookies are consumed by 1% of the monsters on PBS. #OccupySesameStreet.” Take a side of humor with your heaping liberal dinner and be comforted by the thought that all of the Muppets are on your side.

You can read the best of the #OccupySesameStreet tweets here and the next time you march on your city, don’t forget that some muppets are living in trash cans.  #OCCUPYSESAMESTREET

When Puppets Rap

While drafting this post, it became clear to me that a large portion of my childhood was molded by puppets. Not the kind lonely kids play with when nobody can come over for a play date—the walking, talking, singing and dancing variety found on the majority of 90’s children’s shows.

The Muppets, the Sesame Street gang and the Fraggle Rock crew taught me how to count, spell and share as a tot, and have moved on to match my adult interests with a new pursuit—rap.

Yes, you heard me correctly, puppet raps are popping up left and right these days, and I’m loving every felt-faced, lip-syncing minute of it! Get your fix of puppet rhymes with my picks for the top three puppet raps:

#3: “Let Me Clear My Throat” by DJ Kool, featuring the Fraggles from Fraggle Rock

I’m embarrassed to say I find myself humming the Fraggle Rock theme song on a regular basis. These little multi-colored creatures were some of my favorites as a kid. Their holiday special was beyond heartwarming, and clearly their knack for lip-syncing goes way beyond sing-along songs. These guys were born to bust rhymes.

#2: “Sure Shot” by The Beastie Boys, featuring The Sesame Street crew

Sesame Street taught me a lot about life: If you’re a grouch like Oscar, nobody will like you, mimicking the Cookie Monster leads to obesity, and referring to yourself in third-person like Elmo gets annoying quick. Their rendition of “Sure Shot” by the Beastie Boys (another 90’s great) is almost as awesome as the original.

#1: “Monster” by Kanye West, featuring The Muppets

Just when I thought I couldn’t love Kanye West any more, he tweeted the link to this video, proving to me that not only does he have amazing lyrical talents, but a great sense of humor to boot. Kermit’s got some serious moves, but Miss Piggy’s convincing performance as Nicki Minaj secures this video as number one on my list.
