Welcome Hashtag Jameson!

I’ll admit it, I overuse #hashtags just as much as the next social media obsessed girl, but even this crosses the line for me. Please help me in welcoming to the world, newborn baby Hashtag Jameson. That’s right, the world’s first Twitter-inspired baby name.

No one needs to question where the inspiration for this baby’s name came from. Clearly Mama Jameson spent a little too much time on Twitter over the past nine months. Maybe she should have spent more time working on her spelling…wey and luv, really?

Let’s come up with some nicknames for sweet baby Hashtag. What about Hash? Pound? #? Or maybe when she’s 21 she can be known as #ing Jameson? I’m sure that Hashtag’s classmates with normal names will come up with many clever taunts.

Or maybe I’m wrong and Hashtag will fit right in. Apparently a couple in Israel named their child Like, after the Facebook feature, and a father in Egypt named his daughter Facebook. Hashtag, Like and Facebook should have a playgroup, accompanied by their social media-obsessed parents.

Whether or not Hashtag will be teased or embraced by her peers, I am certain that this weird baby name fad is not something in which I will ever take part. But for any parents looking to name their newborn after a recent trend, consider Sandy, Gangnam, Belieber. You’re welcome.

What’s in a Name?

When you’re getting married, everyone asks you, “When are you getting married?” and then immediately following, “Where are you getting married?” The answers are matter-of-fact and easy to answer.

Then, you get pregnant and everyone asks you, “Do you know if you’re having boy or a girl?” and then immediately following, “What are you going to name him/her?” Not so easy to answer.

In comes Nymbler.com, a website that offers baby naming assistance to clueless parents (and, let’s face it, that’s basically every first time mom and dad). We’ve all met a Mildred and a Gertrude and thought, “That poor girl, what were her parents thinking?” In an effort to prevent bad names from happening to good people, baby-naming expert, Laura Wattenberg began her site. Her specialty is “analyzing name style-sorting”, so if you type in the name, “Madison” as your inspiration, the site will automatically generate a handful of other similar names that you might be interested in. For instance, “Madison” generates “Aspen”, “Sydney” (clearly sticking with the city theme here) as well as “Ava”, “Ashlyn” and “Hannah”.

The site offers hundreds of name choices for boys and girls and the more inspiration names you select, the more options you’ll be given. Heck, even without a bun in the oven, this site amazes me.

After reviewing all the names out there, I’d say it’s a good thing you have nine months…
