The Season of Love Actually

There are a few things that mark the beginning of the holiday season: the (some would say premature) store displays and decorations that start to saturate the aisles of department and grocery stores just after Halloween, the sudden appearance of indulgent baked goods in the office on the daily (are my coworkers trying to make me fat?), and, my personal favorite, the dusting off of the delightful holiday classic Love Actually. One “bro” in this great article by The Cut hit the nail on the head when he called it “Love Actually season.”

If you are not familiar with the movie, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, first of all, I feel bad for you, and second, this is the perfect time to remedy the situation. The romantic comedy-ish flick, set during the holidays, finds the perfect blend of comedy, heartbreak, and of course, love (without being mushy) and packs it into two hours of pure cinematic genius. Love Actually has something for everyone (even you, guys – see the article above); instead of focusing on one plot line, it melds several together, and each story is charming in its own way. Plus, it stars a slew of celebs, from Hugh Grant to Keira Knightley to Liam Neeson. It will make you laugh, it may make you cry, it will make your heart flutter, but most of all, it will remind you that, as unpredictable and as agonizing as it can be, love is all around us.

So do yourself a favor: make some popcorn, pour some wine, and cuddle up on the couch with someone you love (or, you know, by yourself) to watch Love Actually.

Happy Love Actually season, loyal m.blog readers!
